Portugal’s Hidden Skylight Beach — Boat Access Only

This secluded cavern in Portugal features a skylight and a sandy shore; access is only possible by boat.

It is often regarded as one of the most stunning caves on the planet.

The Algarve region in Portugal attracts numerous holidaymakers each summer thanks to its sun-soaked, sandy beaches, charming fishing villages, historic forts, enchanting castles, delectable regional cuisine (including acclaimed red wine), and stunning natural scenery. The southernmost part of the country boasts a dramatic coastline characterized by sheer limestone cliffs and rocky features adorned with secluded beaches and enigmatic caves, with Benagil being the most awe-inspiring among them.

Situated between the towns of Portimao and Albufeira, Benagil has developed over 20 million years due to erosion. Despite being a cave, it defies the typical image of dark and dreary spaces. This is why, during the warmer months, you’ll often see a queue of tourist boats waiting to enter the cave. What makes it so popular (and perfect for Instagram) is the natural opening in its ceiling, formed by rainfall, which allows ample sunlight to filter in. Another unique aspect of Benagil that draws a constant stream of visitors is its sandy beach, which is most enjoyable during low tide.

The sea cave, often likened to a cathedral due to its impressive size and dome-like interior, boasts two entrances shaped by the relentless crashing of waves against the limestone cliffs.

Benagil is also a part of the Algarve’s most renowned and picturesque hiking route, the Seven Hanging Valleys, which leads you on a 7.4-mile adventure along the coastline and its breathtaking vistas. For safety precautions, the area around the skylight is enclosed, yet you can still catch a glimpse from the trail. To experience this natural marvel, your sole opportunity is to access it via boat, kayak, or paddleboard. While it’s technically feasible to swim to the cave, it’s not advisable due to the hazardous rocky shoreline, strong swells, and rough seas.

To avoid the crowds when visiting the renowned Benagil cave in the Algarve, consider arriving early in the morning or later in the evening. Another option is to explore the area during the off-peak summer season. Algarve boasts ample sunshine, making it a delightful destination in both spring and autumn as well, allowing you to fully relish all it has to offer
