If you were asked to close your eyes and to tell the first image that comes to mind about Helsinki, you’d probably say that it is the Helsinki Cathedral. At least this is what it happens with most people. It is the most recognizable spot of the city. Since 1852, when the construction of the Helsinki Cathedral was over, this building has been imposing its beauty over the Senate Square of Helsinki, right in the middle of the city (map). Its facade can be seen in many photos and during all kinds of media coverage, because many events and protests take place in front of it.

The cathedral originally was built as a tribute to the Tzar Nicholas I of Russia, because for many years Finland was part of Russia and was known as the Great Duchy of Finland. The Cathedral, by Carl Ludvig Engel, rising on the northern side of the Senate Square is the stage of national and academic festive services and one of the most popular tourist sights. The church is part of Helsinki's Empire era center and a landmark for those arriving by sea. It has become the symbol of the whole of Helsinki. Earlier called St. Nicholas Church and Great Cathedral, the current main church of the Helsinki Diocese was completed in 1852. Sculptures of the twelve apostles guard the city from the roof of the church. Exhibitions at the Crypt (Kirkkokatu 18) is during the summer also serves as a souvenir shop Cathedral Shop.

Admire the grand exterior of Helsinki Cathedral and stop at a small souvenir shop in the bell tower. Architect Carl Ludvig Engel and planner Johan Albrecht Ehrenström designed this magnificent church. The present structure was completed in the mid-19th century and dedicated to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, the Grand Duke of Finland. Notice the smaller buildings around Helsinki Cathedral, all constructed as part of Engel’s Senate Square.

The central dome was designed to allow natural light into the cathedral from many angles. This unique structure reaches about 260 feet (80 meters) above sea level and is one of the church’s most recognizable features. Notice the symmetrical plan of the church, visible in its four smaller domes and equal arms. Helsinki Cathedral is located in the neighborhood of Kruununhaka, in the heart of Helsinki. This popular attraction is about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from Helsinki Airport. It is open daily; however, the souvenir shop and church café are open only during the summer.
